A few months back I wrote an article about a list which I had started some 10 years ago when I began managing projects. This list is a hodge-podge of things which worked and things which didn’t. I’ve added items as years have years passed, sometimes subtracted and also updated statements to be more relative as I’ve grown personally and professionally. In that last article I focused specifically on 5 common reasons project managers fail and fall down. Today I’d like to balance that article with 5 ways to succeed. Before beginning I’d like to qualify the 5 ways I’ve identified.

If you don’t mind filling out a little extra paperwork and carefully monitoring how long it takes you to complete the course, pilot testing is a good way to earn free or low cost CPE credit.
The term “pilot testing” refers to the process of having a group of volunteers take a course before it is released to the public, noting any problems or issues with the course, and reporting the number of hours it took to complete the course.

Because the Advertising Agencies tell you it works without producing one iota of evidence to substantiate their claims as to the exclusive increase in sales that one advertising campaign has produced!
It works because we live in an over informed society, and the agencies are working very hard to increase the quantity (but not quality) of clutter

Everyone starts to consider goals for the future when the year comes to an end. You may be in a position where you have been considering starting up your own business, or you may have a business but are ready to take it to the next level, but for one reason or another have been putting off the steps necessary to ‘go there’. You have to set goals to make it reality, however. Often fear is what holds us back from setting goals. What if you fail? Or what if you succeed?? You want it but it scares you terribly!

As I sat down to write this week’s column, I can’t get a simple song I learned so many years ago at Boy Scout camp out of my mind: “Be, be, be prepared, the motto of the Boy Scouts; Be, be, be prepared, the motto of the Scouts….”
Professional communicators responsible for creating content for digital signage networks and private TV channels should take note of that admonition. Being prepared for predictable emergency contingencies could mean the difference between safety, injury or even death.

It’s an event employees don’t look forward to experiencing and many supervisors cringe having to do. What is this common feared experience? It’s a performance review. There really is no reason for either party to feel bad about doing a performance review. If certain guidelines are followed, the process can be turned from a fearful event to a positive experience.

During a coaching session I was doing this week we discovered that one of the problems the group I was working with was going through was that they were revealing too much information about the problems they saw, too early in the call. Over-divulging too much info is a cardinal sin of selling and here are some reasons why this is so.

Coaching Prediction #3: There will be an increase in mainstream criticism of coaching and the self-help industry as a whole.
