Taglines work. I remember several great ones from marketing generations past. I bet you do, too. Decades later, you can probably still name the brands these taglines represented:

Where’s the beef?Let your fingers do the walkin’.Melts in your mouth, not in your hands.Don’t leave home without it.We try harder.

Children Wanted For Experiments

This headline is the best attention-getter that I have come across in my 14 years of sales writing. It was originally used (presumably inadvertently) to recruit volunteers for a clinical trial.

If you want more customers for your business, there is a powerful learning point to take from it – the process of winning new clients starts with attracting their attention and making them aware that you exist.

Unemployment Woes

The Northern parts of France, the traditional industrial areas, are being blighted by job woes. The last coal mines shut down in 1974, and the textile industry is quietly moving to greener pastures, for that read, cheaper labour. The folk living in these areas have requested answers from their political candidates running for the French presidency. According to some women interviewed in Poix-du-Nord, who have jobs in a CMT factory until its closure in October 2007, when they asked their candidate Royal as to what she had to say about their impending job losses, all the response they got was ‘Good Luck’.

Power of Exponential Numbers

The theory of Exponential numbers basically means that on a J-curve most of the growth happens towards the end or that the size of the numbers very quickly increases at an exponential rate in certain types of observed growth.

Perhaps the most common example of a growth rate that grows began really slowly at first only to explode later on is the size of the total human population on earth. For thousands of years the number of humans was nearly static with only a very slow growth rate, however in the last couple of hundred years the growth rate has exploded and the doubling time is shortening. The power of these numbers can be better understood when one realizes that despite the length of human history if we added up all the individuals who ever lived by far the majority have lived in the last 200 years (if not even closer to 100 years) – despite the many thousands of years before, the majority of people who have ever lived are likely to be living now.
