One Size Does Not Fit All
We all make mistakes. Some we can shrug off with little consequence while others can impact our lives for a very long time. Choosing the wrong video to rent is not big deal but accepting a position with a company that is wrong for you is a mistake that can haunt you for months or years to come. Have you ever taken a job that you regretted later? Were there signs for you to see that perhaps this wasn’t the idea match-up for you? Probably, but in your eagerness to have them accept you, you chose not to see them.
Think back to the day of the interview. When you walked into the business what was the atmosphere like? Were the people smiling, joking and interacting well with each other or was the environment cold, sterile and strictly no nonsense? How did the staff who were not involved with the interview process, interact with you? Did they smile and seem genuinely glad to see you or were they walking around like drones on a mission and oblivious to your presence?
How many people were involved in the interview process? It is generally a good sign of the value they put on you if a company is willing to invest the time of more than one of its key people. How were you treated at the interview? Did they show any signs of trying to make you feel comfortable? Did they offer coffee, juice or water? Were you lumped together with other candidates and made to feel like you were at an audition?
How much respect were you shown? If they kept you waiting or forgot about the interview, how did they react? Did they acknowledge it and genuinely apologize for their oversight or did they act like it didn’t matter at all? A company that shows little or no respect during an interview won’t show it to you after you’re on staff.
I have met clients that still bear the scars of being in the wrong job or with the wrong company years after the experience. Unfortunately, it can affect their self-confidence, health and future employment opportunities. Often, when a person leaves a toxic workplace, they believe they were the problem or that every workplace will be as unpleasant. This can impact them in how much value they think they have to offer a new employer or by making them reluctant to apply at all.
Take your blinders off at the interview and remember that while they are assessing your fit into their company, you are assessing to see if they would be right for you too. You are trading part of your life for this job. You won’t get it back when the job is finished. So make it the best trade possible
