Marketing is what being in business is all about. But in the excitement of setting up a new company (which is generally all about spending money, rather than making it), it’s very easy to lose sight of this. The result is that a business can be up and running before its managers have even planned how they will actually sell their product or service.

Dental practice marketing, like most all off-line businesses has been advancing rapidly to include mobile
web browsing, email and other online activities. The web was an upstart about ten short years ago and not many
knew how to take advantage of it clearly for their own gain. That has changed. Dental practice marketing has advanced
into the realm of the digital world, because their prospects and clients have done the same. People who need the services of
a dentist are going online and finding their solutions there at an increasing pace. Will you be taking advantage of
this for your own dental practice?

Customer service research suggests that you must connect with your customers and prospects at least 13 times for them to remember your name. If your goal is to be the first company that they think of or what is called Top of Mind Awareness, you must touch your customers and prospects 33 times each year. That number will only go up as information continues to flow as an ever increasing rate of speed.

The internet has brought so much change into our lives. It has also provided numerous jobs that no one would ever dream possible. One of those positions is as a moderator for message boards on major magazine sites.
While on one of several sites that I enjoy being a member of, I wondered: How does this work? It’s good to have someone “in charge” and to go to when there is a problem to dispel or a question to answer, but how can they know what’s going on 24/7? With that in mind, I asked one savvy Message Board Moderator named Laura if she would share the details of her job. After receiving permission from the publishers (the Meredith Corporation) of Better Homes and Gardens and Lady’s Home Journal Laura was gracious enough to explain all that her job entails.

If you have good team members then you can afford to rely on them to do their part, micromanagement will only bring grief. Most of us have a tendency to constantly check up on others to make sure the job is done correctly. I know at home most of us walk behind our children and try to get them to see it your way. This is a form of micromanagement and it should be left at home when you go into the office. If you are working with a Power Team, they are in business because they can do the job and do it right. Instead of putting on the micromanagement hat, try asking questions that will let you relax and let them get on with the job. The best way to do this is to set milestones for the project. These milestones will act as reminders of where you should be (and the team member) in the process.

Getting in touch with your inner customer
One of the most unfortunate things that happen when you open a business is that you lose touch with what it would be like to be your customer. As the owner or manager, it is nearly impossible to get the same experience that a paying customer would have in your establishment. Your service will be just a little (or a lot) better. The kitchen will take extra care with your food. Inevitably, you’ll mix in a little shop talk that will give you a much larger share of your staff’s time than any customer will ever garner. All of this assumes that you actually go in and attempt to dine like a mere mortal.

No matter what type of business you are in, getting involved in the community through fundraising, is invaluable for getting exposure for your company.
There are a number of ways to be involved in fundraising for your community. Here are a few examples:
Offer time, products or services to be used in a Silent Auction. Advertise your business and what you donated in the local paper or the Silent Auction promotion.
Donate a percentage of your sales on an item or items to raise funds for a worthy cause in your community. Keep customers informed about how much you have raised and how the funds are being used by that organization.
Start your own fundraising campaign for a need in your community. Maybe it is backpacks for children in the fall, Christmas meals or presents during the holidays, etc…Unsure of where to start? What are you passionate about? Health, children, or safety of residents? Take a little time so you can be involved in something that is meaningful and you will be more credible.

“Well, guys, all I can say is … he’s upright and taking nourishment, but I don’t think he’ll be allowed visitors anytime soon.”
That little ditty came from a fellow manager in response to our inquiry on one of our fellow change agents. I was visiting headquarters of a company where I’d been working a couple years before. I was looking for a particular person who’d been working on the change project and couldn’t find him anywhere. It was like he’d been banished, no one but this fellow had a clue where he might be. It had been two years and he was lost in the bowels of change, career long gone, working diligently for a paycheck and wondering what he was going to do with his life.
