The best way to measure your success in direct mail donor acquisition is to examine your cost to raise a donor rather than your cost to raise a dollar.
Your cost to raise a dollar is a perfectly valid metric in direct mail fundraising, of course. By dividing the cost of your mailing by the gross income, you arrive at a number that helps you compare different mailings, compare results across different years, and compare fundraising methods (such as direct mail versus banquets versus telephone fundraising).

There are a few good questions that business owners, teachers and leaders ask when they are planning for growth in their classroom, their company or their life. Who are my students or clients or friends – really? What makes them tick? And what is unique about the people I serve and regularly connect with?

Staying fit and looking younger is a cherished dream which all, irrespective of age, sex or creed, want to realize. This vision has given birth to a new generation, christened “fitness freaks.” Typical characteristics include lack of time, faster lifestyles, endless attempts to be fit or rather slimmer (slim is the latest synonym to fit), crazy eating habits, and a new schedule every morning. Among the many cities most undoubtedly fitting these criteria is Manhattan. The unnerving demands and complicated lifestyles embedded in the regular functioning of Manhattan certainly make even stronger grounds for a fitness center business there.

Are you satisficing, or optimizing?
Nobel Lauriate Herbert Simon coined the word satisficing to describe doing what is adequate, rather than optimizing (doing one’s best).
Satisficing can make us feel good, it can produce short term results, but satisficing cannot and will not create the foundation of innovation, action-ability, accountability, values alignment, communication, collaboration, effectiveness and leadership that can keep us moving forward.

Limited Liability Corporations are a non-corporate form of business in which the owners actively take part in the management. They are protected against personal liability in case of organizational debts and obligations.
Individual state law governs the creation of any LLC. Members are required to file documents with the Secretary of State. Many states require the filing of articles of organization. The LLC usually starts functioning on the same day that the articles of organization are filed. A filing fee is paid to the Secretary of State. Members have to be careful regarding the various costs that are incurred during the formation and registration of the LLC, to avoid paying repetitive costs and/or fees.

Allergies and Asthma are a common concern for families today considering pets, my family included. However, there are some animals available that are hypo-allergenic. This DOES NOT mean that that they are non-allergenic. Hypo-allergenic simply means that they produce fewer allergens, and people with slight to medium strength allergies may be fine with these pets. People with severe asthma and allergies may still have allergic reactions when around pets. In this case, you are better off looking for a pet that is entirely hairless, as there is little to no dander involved.

If you are unhappy at work it may be because your major career decisions were made for the wrong reasons. This is very common, especially when you consider that many of those decisions are made at a very young age, when you had little experience of the world outside school or college. In addition, the careers advice you were given was probably brief and possibly delivered by someone with little training. Added to this, your parents may have encouraged you to get a good job, brushing aside some of your own ideas as unrealistic. And they probably paid for your education and so after years of training for a specific career, you feel you’re stuck with it.

No, it was not a typo. What it is really all about is that those of us that are self-employed need help planning our businesses. When planning our business however we need to understand that so many sources offering help are completely irrelevant to our life. Why, because the so-called expert business gurus talk in theory not grass roots reality. I visited one of Donald Trump’s websites the other day for an example and on it there was a flow chart explaining some theory on how to manage people. It was written by some guy with a doctorate in management theory at an Ivy League School. It reminded me of some of the theories presented in my college business classes. Theories that are entirely irrelevant to me and my business clients. 99% of the people in business for themselves are not worried about how to manage their labor force. Most entrepreneurs are worried about how to manage their children and the barking dog while they answer the phone. Yet somehow, people keep buying into this stuff as if it’s applicable. Note: it is not applicable. It’s not that I want people planning or starting their own business to think small but I do want them to think about their current reality. Save the flow charts for later.

Be an Effective Manager and Tell Them
To have a successful career in any company you must know how to build relationships. In addition, one of the most important relationships is between the manager and their direct reports. The strength of this relationship can have a direct result on the success of a team. Yes the relationship between the manager and their staff must be ‘open’ and ‘trustworthy’, that’s a given – but what else should your staff expect from you, their manager?

Years ago, I had a miserable experience running my law practice. In order to pay the bills, I had short-sightedly taken on all clients and all types of legal cases. Experienced lawyers call this practicing “door law,” meaning the practice of taking whatever walks through the door.
