A father / son team of convicted felons actually did this in the early 1990s. The Dominion of Melchizedek, a totally fictitious, sovereign nation was located on an uninhabited Stoll owned by the Republic of Marshall Islands in the Atlantic Ocean,, off the coast of Columbia, South America. President of this island nation was the son’s wife, who reportedly lived in California. It was purportedly a quasi-religious society governed by a “House of Elders.” It had a complete financial system with phony banks and stock exchanges. It sold citizenships, insurance and stock licenses. It sold diplomatic passports, religious grants, business licenses.. And, it had an embassy listing in Washington, D.C., Unbelievably, it was actually “recognized” by an African state. (One can only question what these officials were smoking at the time.) This mighty little nation even had the boldness to declare war on France for nuclear testing. (The mouse that roared?)

Therein lies a trap: staying current and doing research are not activities reserved only for those managers who are not constantly busy. Most, if not all managers, are constantly busy. Small business managers are usually much too busy. The temptation is to consider staying current with the profession and doing research relating to your product, services and costs of doing business as something not necessary or not possible. Try telling the family farmer that it is not necessary to watch market prices and continually research market trends for his or her crops! Try telling that to the folks raising catfish or the business manager who plans to purchase a faster printing press for the county newspaper.

Years ago I was in Vancouver shopping by the wharf and a flock of seagulls flew over my friend and I.
SPLAT!
You guessed it – a bird had lined us up from above and dropped a missile – it fortunately missed me and hit my friend right on the top of her gorgeous blonde hair!

aren’t rich because of how much they spend but
because of how much they save.
If you need to find millionaires who will donate a large
sum of money to your non-profit organization, look for
tightwads, not millionaires.
